Shelterbelts
Shelterbelts and tree plantings are a proven soil conservation management tool. Trees are available to County farmers at no charge via the Agri-Environment Services Branch (AESB) Prairie Shelterbelt Program (PSP), formally known as the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA), under Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. We also have a plastic tree mulch applicator for use through AESB at no charge. Plastic mulch can be obtained from private manufacturers.
- Visit the Prairie Shelterbelt Program page for application forms and further information
You may also purchase trees from the Alberta Shelterbelt Program through Alberta Nurseries in Bowden (Tel: 403-224-3544), click their link for more information on available tree varieties and applications. Trees are delivered early May in co-operation with the Agricultural Service Board.
The County has a tree seedlings-planter and staff available to assist with planting. This can be rented at $ 65 per hour (approximately 500 trees can be planted per hour depending on spacing and planting conditions). To reserve use of the tree-planter, please call the County office at 403-335-3311 ext.184 during regular business hours, Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
