Municipal Awards

Mountain View County's Municipal Area Partnership (MAP) was developed in partnership with the Towns of Carstairs, Didsbury, Olds, Sundre, and the Village of Cremona. The municipalities worked together to develop an intermunicipal development framework and a memorandum of agreement template addressing annexation; cost sharing for utilities, infrastructure and community services; public consultation; dispute resolution; and regional solidarity. The municipalities developed an innovative process for working together to seek sustainable and diversified tax bases under a regional umbrella.
Mountain View County and its urban partners were recognized twice in November 2009 for ongoing efforts promoting sustainable growth in both the towns, and the County.
On November 4, Mountain View County's Municipal Area Partnership (MAP)-which was developed together with the Towns of Carstairs, Didsbury, Olds and Sundre, and the Village of Cremona-was named the 2009 recipient of the Minister's Award of Municipal Excellence for Outstanding Achievement. The partnership's Inter-municipal Development Plan and Memorandum of Agreement Templates, which streamline annexations and reduce intermunicipal competition, were chosen from 42 submissions as the example of an outstanding municipal partnership.
"These municipalities have fully embraced the ideas of collaboration and regional land use planning. The Municipal Area Partnership has developed an innovative process for working together to see sustainable and diversified tax bases without undue reliance on nonrenewable resources."
- Municipal Affairs Minister Ray Danyluk
"Building solid foundations is not just a necessity for today or tomorrow, but for generations to come and to get there we need to work together," said Municipal Affairs Minister Ray Danyluk. "I am really pleased to see that Mountain View County and its partners have come up with solutions that go beyond municipal borders - and benefit the citizens of all your communities."
The Municipal Area Partnership was also recognized by its Central Alberta counterparts on November 19 at the Central Alberta Economic Partnership's (CAEP) Annual Achievement Awards. The partnership received the Collaboration/Partnership award, which recognizes partnerships of three or more CAEP members working together successfully to develop leading practices in economic development in Central Alberta. County Reeve Al Kemmere was also elected Chair of the CAEP Board of Directors for 2010, after serving as Vice Chair since 2008.
